Stores across the country are expected to hire up to 600,000 employees between late October and December—but it’s not all holiday cheer and good will. According to a recent study by the National Retail Federation, the shorter an employee’s tenure, the greater the chances that he or she will steal from the store, which makes these seasonal hires even riskier. To combat this growing problem, more retailers are utilizing background checks when hiring seasonal workers.

The truth is, even though these seasonal workers will only be around for a month or two, they can still do significant damage in that time. With the hustle and bustle of the holiday season and so many new workers and increased amounts of customers, it’s easier for seasonal workers to steal from their employers.

So while screening all these seasonal workers may seem like an expensive and time-consuming burden, you’re actually protecting yourself and your company from potentially extensive losses and damages in the long run—and giving yourself one less thing to worry about this holiday season.

Sincerely,

“2007 Background Screening Trends” Report

Background screening has evolved since its inception in the 1980s, and more than 85 percent of companies now utilize multiple screens in their efforts to protect themselves, their employees and their clients. A growing number of businesses, both small and large, are also using background screens in conjunction with assessments and in-depth interviews to find the best candidate for the job. In order to maximize the results of the background screen, HR professionals, recruiters and executives must fully understand the need for the screen, the risks associated with faulty screens and sub-par screening providers and the cost savings and legal protection high-quality screening services can provide.
